SoftBank accelerates AI chip push as FTC clears Ampere takeover

The US Federal Trade Commission has ended its review of SoftBank’s planned acquisition of Ampere Computing, removing the final procedural hurdle for a major expansion of SoftBank’s artificial intelligence chip portfolio.

The agency had issued an early termination notice on its website, confirming that the review has been closed ahead of schedule.

This brings the all-cash agreement announced in March closer to completion and gives SoftBank freedom to move forward with a deal valued at $6.5 billion.

The acquisition now aligns with the company’s wider ambition to build a stronger position in the global AI hardware sector.

The early termination is an official conclusion of a process.

Although that raised uncertainty at the time, the latest development shows the FTC is no longer scrutinising the transaction.

SoftBank expands AI chip network

The acquisition of Ampere forms part of SoftBank’s plan to establish a more connected ecosystem of companies involved in AI infrastructure.

Ampere designs server processors used heavily in data centre environments.

These processors power systems that handle large-scale computing needs, including AI workloads.

By bringing Ampere into its portfolio, SoftBank gains direct access to a key supplier in an industry where demand for advanced chips continues to rise.

The move also strengthens SoftBank’s position at a time when global cloud providers are exploring alternatives to traditional chip designs.

Ampere already serves this market by producing processors that support high-performance computing at lower power consumption levels.

This positions the company as an important player within next-generation data centre operations.

SoftBank’s planned ownership of Ampere places it one step closer to influencing how data centres adapt to the growing demand for AI processing capacity.

Arm technology connection grows

SoftBank is already the majority owner of Arm, the UK-based semiconductor designer whose technology is used across consumer electronics and increasingly in server environments.

Arm designs the architecture that many companies rely on when creating new processors.

Ampere is one such company that licenses Arm’s technology as the basis for its own chips.

This creates a direct link between the two businesses that would now come under the same parent company.

SoftBank also has an existing connection to Graphcore, another UK chip company focused on AI applications.

Together with Ampere and Arm, these businesses place SoftBank at the centre of several closely aligned technologies.

The overlap gives the company a role across multiple stages of semiconductor development, from fundamental architecture to specialised AI processors used inside data centres.

This combination enhances SoftBank’s influence at a time when AI adoption continues to reshape computing patterns worldwide.

Industry impact

The FTC decision removes any remaining regulatory barrier to the Ampere acquisition and supports SoftBank’s strategy to consolidate assets that can drive future growth in AI infrastructure.

The deal offers SoftBank greater control over technologies that underpin changing data centre requirements.

It also supports the company’s long-term ambition to build a stable foundation for AI chip development as competition intensifies between semiconductor makers across the US, UK, and Asia.

As demand for processors capable of handling AI workloads accelerates, the addition of Ampere gives SoftBank another advantage in a crowded sector.

With Arm, Graphcore, and Ampere all linked to its expanding network, SoftBank is shaping a broader ecosystem that could influence how companies develop and deploy AI hardware over the coming years.
